We are a group of parents who have children who have been diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder.
This can happen to a child for a variety of reasons. Raising these children is very challenging. We think that reading about other's challenges is very helpful and encouraging. So we created this blog so we can write things we go through without infringing upon our children's privacy. For this reason we will not use our children's names or our own. We hope you find this blog helpful

Crazy things therapists say.

Alright moms, time for something a little fun. After all sometimes if we don't laugh we will cry!
What are some funny things you have heard therapists tell you? Here are couple to get the ball rolling that I have heard.

* There is no such thing as RAD.
*He has to get used to being away from you.
* Lying is a completely normal and acceptable age appropriate behavior.
* (to my son)Tell me your stories. (she meant his life story, he thought she meant make up stories)
* I don't need to read his history, it's irrelivant.

Come on moms, I know you have some to add.

  1. Our first therapist said something I will never forget though I am not sure this qualifies as funny. She said, "Well no wonder he hates you, you abandoned him. Think about it." That has never left my mind since. I wonder sometimes why even therapists don't always think before things come out of their mouth.

  2. Therapists are interesting folk. My eyes were really opened after attending a BCLC advanced training seminar. There I was in a room FULL of "therpists" and "counselors", with just a few moms.
At lunch, they were all trading cards and I felt like a fish out of water. I had no card to trade.:)
And then this woman sitting next to me had this GRAND idea on how she could make money! Sell the books and use the materials in the books and uh... as we were talking, share some of MY methods! Hello! I'm just a mom!
    I was more than shocked.
Therapists go to school like mechanics and computer programmars and accountants do, and then when they graduate, they hang a sign that says, "I'm qualified."
